The interview talks about Ico Island and the publishing of a children's book.
The story behind the story:
I wrote the story for Ico Island back in the summer of 1991 either right after or right before Japanese investors bought Rockefeller Square in New York. That purchase and similar purchases that were in the headlines made me think about the value that people place on goods. Real property, like a building, gives something to the owner. In a good economy a building gives an owner rent. To sell it you must give up that future income. To make it simplier I started imagining a smaller place. A place with only one asset. The place had to be an island because it would be small. This simplified things. A tree became the only asset on the island, a boy became the only person on the island, and the story grew from there. As a side note, in real life the Japanese investors got burned when the value of the Yen and the Dollar changed and their investments in real property in the Uniterd States were no longer as profitable. Ico Island is much simplier, just a boy, a tree and an island. I hope that you find something valuable in the story that you are able to share with someone else.
